Estonian Youth Wind Orchestra (EstYWO) is the legal successor of the Republican Youth Wind Orchestra, founded in 1972. The founder and the chief conductor of the Republican Youth Wind Orchestra was Ilmar Tõnisson and the
orchestra was administrated by Ene Raid. The 60-member orchestra was formed from the pupils of Estonian music schools and its most noteworthy concert tours during the Soviet era included Artek (1978), Moscow (1979), Leningrad (1985, now St Petersburg), Finland (Lieksa 1989) and Sweden (Gothenburg 1989).

During the collapse of the Soviet Union and Estonia's regaining of independence, there were no financial means to continue the work of the orchestra and thus its activity was temporarily suspended. In 1994, the Estonian Youth Wind Orchestra recommenced its activities under Estonian Choral Association with Ott Kask and Harry Illak as conductors. The orchestra performed at international competitions in Riva del Garda (Italy) in 1999 and at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade (Holland), where they won respectively silver and gold medal.

Aavo Ots was the chief conductor of the EstYWO during 2008-2013, he invited Valdo Rüütelmaa to the place of a conductor, in 2009, also Jaan Ots joined the orchestra.

In 2009, the orchestra performed at the international wind instrument festival “Mürtsub Pill” (Cheering Horn) in Tartu, EstYWO was also the official orchestra of the Aavo Ots orchestral conducting master class during the IV Baltic Wind Instrument School. In 2010, the orchestra performed at the international competition for orchestras in France, on the same year they won the First Prize at the competition of Estonian wind orchestras in the category of concert orchestras.

In 2013, the Estonian Youth Wind Orchestra participated at the ESTO days in the United States, San Francisco.

2013-2018, the music council of Estonian Choral Society appointed Sirly Illak-Oluvere as the chief conductor of EstYWO, the second conductor was Riivo Jõgi (2013-2017) and the project manager was Maria Mägar.

In 2014, the orchestra organized two camps – in January (Türi, Estonia) and in August (Võru and Vana-Vigala, Estonia). Andres Kontus (trombone), Madis Vilgats (tuba), Indrek Vau (trumpet) and Rene Laur (saxophone) tutored the camp in August. In addition a recognized Russian musician Arkady Shilkloper performed on alphorn in a concert together with EstYWO. In Vana-Vigala the orchestra gave a concert together with youth choirs all over Estonia: Boys Choir Kalev, Gilrs’ Choir Leelo and Estonian Youth Mixed Choir.

On 2017 orchestra partisipated  in Welt Jugendmusik Festivalil (WJMF) competition (Zurich) and got high II place in categori H2 (87.67 points). Conductor was Sirly Illak-Oluvere.

In the end of 2017 orchestra performed Pärt Uusberg´s "Estonian atmospere" with youth choirs all over Estonia. That same piece was recorded in 2018 summer.

In autumn, 2018, the music council of Estonian Choral Society appointed Riivo Jõgi as the chief conductor of EstYWO, the second conductor is Tarmo Kivisilla.

EstYWO is an orchestral school for future professional wind instrument players. The orchestra aims to set high demands
in its work to achieve the best results. They prefer mainly symphonic wind instrument music in their concert programs.

Estonian Cultural Endowment, The Council of Gambling Tax, Estonian Ministry of Education and Research, Estonian Ministry of Culture and the musician’s hometown governments support the nation-wide youth musical group Estonian
Youth Wind Orchestra.
